Very known for his music and for his painting, CharlElie Couture, born Bertrand Couture in 1956, is a French artist coming from Nancy. As he started to be attracted by art really young, he studied at the school of fine arts of his city in the 70's, where he got a deep sense of composition and learnt to build an authentic and unique work, very much contemporary. For more than 30 years, CharlElie followed a path he calls 'total art', which mean a global attitude consisting in finding interconnections between different forms of human expression such as writing, image and music. He belongs to the 'multist' wave of pluridisciplinary artists of whom he is a notorious reference. Charlélie Couture (born Bertrand Charles Elie Couture, 26 February 1956) is a French and American musician and multi-disciplinary artist, who has recorded over 25 albums and 17 film soundtracks, and has held a number of exhibitions of paintings and photographs. He has also worked as a poster designer, and has published about 15 books of reflections, drawings and photographs.
Life and career
He was born in Nancy, and graduated from l'École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He released his first album, 12 Chansons dans la Sciure ("12 Songs in the Sawdust") in 1978, followed by Le Pêcheur ("The Fisherman") in 1979 and Pochette surprise ("Lucky Dip") in 1981. He was then signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records, becoming the first French artist on the label. He recorded the album Poèmes Rock in New York, and also contributed a track to the album A Christmas Record issued by ZE Records, an affiliate of the Island label. He had a hit single in France with the track Comme un Avion Sans Aile.[1]

Born in Nancy in 1956, CharlÉlie Couture learned to play the piano at a very early age, but it was at the Beaux-Arts, fine arts school, that he chose to train, while pursuing what he defines as “Total Art”, a global attitude consisting of finding interconnections between the forms of human expression that are writing, image and music.
It is nonetheless as a singer-songwriter that he has achieved international success with the release of his album Poèmes Rock and his hit ‘Comme un avion sans aile’ [Like a wingless plane]. That same year he founded the group Local à Louer [Space for Rent] in Nancy, bringing together photographers, painters and poets, and published the Manifeste de l’Art Rock [Rock Art Manifesto], in which he wrote: “Art has to bridge the gap between the functionalism of industrial society and the aspirations of pop culture!”
