Born in Montgomery on Dec. 4, 1927, Anne Carroll Bell George loved reading detective magazines as a child, foretelling her career as a popular mystery novelist.
George grew up to become a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet and served as Alabama's State Poet before writing her Southern Sisters Mysteries, which included eight books featuring the character Patricia Anne.
George was raised by her grandparents after her parents separated soon after her birth, according to her bio on the Alabama Literary Map.
"When she was eight, economic circumstances forced them to move their household to a farm in Lowndes County, Ala., which was owned by her stepfather's family. One consequence of the move was that she took the train to school every day. Another was that she was placed in fifth grade at the age of eight and initially had trouble fitting in. She soon made friends, however, and became something of a prankster," the bio said.

Before her death, Anne George published close to 100 poems, was an Alabama State Poet, a Writer-in-Residence for the Alabama State Council on the Arts, had one book of poetry selected “Book of the Year” by the Alabama State Poetry Society, and another nominated for a Pulitzer.
And although many Anne George Fans know her for those trouble-making Sisters, Anne’s poetry is not to be overlooked—or overshadowed.
