Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan
Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan (died 680) was the founder of the Umayyad dynasty of caliphs. His clan, which had resisted Mohammed and his message longest and most vehemently, eventually won political control over the Islamic community.
As son of Abu Sufyan, one of the leaders of the Meccan opposition to Mohammed, Muawiya did not adopt Islam until the conquest of Mecca in 630. Muawiya at this time was made secretary to the Prophet, but it was as a warrior in the army sent by the caliph Abu Bakr to conquer Syria that Muawiya first distinguished himself in the Moslem community.
Building a Power Base
As a result of his military exploits, Muawiya was awarded the governorship of Damascus and, under the caliph Omar, became governor over all Syria, in which capacity he served for 20 years. He built the province into a base of support on which he was able to draw during his contest with Ali for the caliphate.
Muawiya appeased the native Christian population of Syria by his tolerance, which included the employment of Christians at his court; and he cultivated the S

The Caliphs
The Meaning of Muawiyah's Name
Hafez ibn Asaker has written in his historical book: 'Jaryat ibn Ghodameh Saedi was with Muawiyah. Muawiyah asked him: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Jaryat ibn Ghodameh.' Muawiyah said: 'Are you more than a bee?' Jaryeh said: 'You compared me with a sweet mouth, but I swear to God that Muawiyah does not mean anything except a bitch (a female dog) which barks and calls the male dogs toward itself, and Omye (Muawiyah's ancestor) is the extended of Omeh (female slave).
(Ibn Asaker's Short History of Damascus v.5, p.365/ Suyuti's Caliphs' History p.133/ Al-Aghad-ol-Farid v.2, p.143/ Al-Mostatref v.1, p. 73/ and Lesan-ol-Arab [has the same meaning for Muawiyah] v.15, p.108)
Sharik ibn Aevar went to Muawiyah's court and said: 'You are Muawiyah, and Muawiyah is a bitch that barks and calls male dogs toward itself.'
(Al-Mostatref v.1, p. 72)
Muawiyah heard all of the sarcasm and pungency and he did not have any chance to proscribe his name because of his mother named him Muawiyah. So he thought a trick and gave one million dirhams to Abdo

Mu'awiya II

He succeeded his father Yazid I as the third caliph and last caliph of the Sufyanid line in the Umayyad dynasty. He ruled briefly in 683–684 (64 AH) before he died.[1]
Early life
Mu'awiya was born in Syria as the son of Yazid I and an unknown mother from the Kalb tribe. She is often confused with Umm Hashim Fakhitah bint Abi Hisham, mother of Mu'awiya's half-brother Khalid ibn Yazid.[1]
His father, Yazid died on 11 November 683 in the central Syrian desert town of Huwwarin, his favourite residence, aged between 35 and 43, and was buried there.
Reign
Before Yazid I died, he had the bay'ah made to his son Mu'awiya. Mu'awiya succeeded his father in Damascus in 64 AH (November 683 CE), at an age of somewhere between 17 and 23. He w
