Hans Fredrik Dahl (born 16 October 1939) is a Norwegian historian, journalist and media scholar, best known in the English-speaking world for his biography of Vidkun Quisling, a Nazi collaborationist and Minister President for Norway during the Second World War. His research is focused on media history, the totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century, and the Second World War. He served as culture editor of Dagbladet 1978–1985 and has been a board member of the paper since 1996. He was a professor at the University of Oslo 1988–2009, and is now a professor emeritus.

Hans Dahl was born on 19th February 1849 in Granvin on the Hardangerfjord in Norway. The son of the infantry captain Hans Andreas Dahl and his wife Eline Jacobine Wallendahl came from a wealthy background and already showed great artistic talent at the age of 16. Nevertheless, at the request of his family, he initially embarked on a military career and became an officer, but while still at the military academy he pursued artistic studies with the Norwegian Romantics Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and Knud Bergslien. Although Hans Dahl graduated at the top of his class at the Krigsskolen in Christiana (Oslo) in 1871, he decided in favour of fine art and went to Karlsruhe in 1872 to study at the art academy there under his fellow countryman Hans Fredrik Gude and the German landscape painter Wilhelm Riefstahl. Dahl had initially seen Munich, Germany's leading art centre at the time, as his destination, but the Norwegian painters' colony around Gude persuaded him to change his plans. Hans Dahl talent artistic ability was clear when he was 16 years old. But, he could not get any artistic training until after his service in the army. Hans Dahl was educated as an officer and became a lieutenant in 1871. After his discharge from the army, he apprenticed with Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and Knud Bergslien. He went to Karlsruhe, where he studied under Hans Fredrik Gude and Wilhelm Riefstahl and after that to Düsseldorf, where his instructors included Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn. His art became associated with the Düsseldorf School of Painting, which was characterized by detailed yet still whimsical landscapes.
Dahl had his first show in Düsseldorf in 1876 and lived in Düsseldorf until 1888, after which he moved to Berlin. Almost every summer, he returned to Norway.
Between 1888 and 1919, Hans Dahl lived in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and spent only the summer in Balestrand. After 1919, left Berlin and lived in Balestrand, which was a much-visited tourist destination in western Norway. Germa
