Biography

Alan Turing was born at Paddington, London. His father, Julius Mathison Turing, was a British member of the Indian Civil Service and he was often abroad. Alan's mother, Ethel Sara Stoney, was the daughter of the chief engineer of the Madras railways and Alan's parents had met and married in India. When Alan was about one year old his mother rejoined her husband in India, leaving Alan in England with friends of the family. Alan was sent to school but did not seem to be obtaining any benefit so he was removed from the school after a few months.

Next he was sent to Hazlehurst Preparatory School where he seemed to be an 'average to good' pupil in most subjects but was greatly taken up with following his own ideas. Alan was born in London, England, in 1912. He was a super smart kid – in fact, his teachers thought he was a genius! The trouble was, that his boarding school in Dorset mostly taught classics (ancient languages and literature) and Alan found these really dull.

Instead, Alan loved maths. He spent most of his time at school solving complex chess problems and learning advanced science all on his own.

Alan Mathison Turing (; 23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist.^[5] He was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing a formalisation of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer.^[6]^[7]^[8] Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science.^[9]
