The first Indian-American elected to the California State Assembly, Ash Kalra has established himself as a voice for the vulnerable, having authored bills that help animals, high school students, and working families, among others. Serving in District 27, which predominantly spans east San Jose, Kalra was reelected in 2018 and cruised to a third term after winning 74.5 percent of the vote in November 2020. After redistricting he moved to Assembly District 25—which is still predominantly along Santa Clara Valley’s eastern foothills—and won with 72.7 percent of the vote.
Background
Born in Toronto in 1972, Kalra moved to San Jose as a child, growing up in the Hayes neighborhood that he still lives in. After earning a law degree from Georgetown University, he worked for 11 years in the public defender’s office for Santa Clara County and then served eight years on the San Jose City Council. He has also been a long-time teacher at the Lincoln School of Law in San Jose.

Ash Kalra (born January 21, 1972) is a Canadian-American politician who has served as a member of the California State Assembly since 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, Kalra previously served on the San Jose City Council from 2008 to 2016.
Kalra represents the 25th Assembly District, which encompasses parts of eastern San Jose, and chairs the California Legislative Progressive Caucus and the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee. A first-generation immigrant, he is the first Hindu and Indian American to serve in the California State Legislature.[1]
Early life and education
Kalra was born in Toronto to Indian parents. His family immigrated to the United States in 1978 and settled in San Jose, California, where Kalra has lived ever since.[2]

Biography
Ash Kalra lives in San Jose, California. Kalra earned a B.A. in communication from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1993, and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1996. His career experience includes working as a planning commissioner with the City of San Jose, as a deputy public defender for Santa Clara County, and as a professor at Lincoln Law School of San Jose. Kalra volunteered with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.[1]
