More than a few students over the past few decades have wished they could spend more time listening to hip-hop, instead of studying such high-school subjects as American history.

The idea of actually merging rap with facts about the origins of the United States might seem as improbable as seeing the image of Biggie Smalls on a $100 bill. Yet Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda has been scoffing at convention for most of his meteoric career.

His new musical, “Hamilton,” sets a tale about Alexander Hamilton and Revolutionary War-era America to hip-hop-style beats and rhymes.

Miranda — who wrote the show”s book, music and lyrics and plays the title character — says, “When I first heard the story of Hamilton”s life, I thought, ”A lot of this out-Dickenses Dickens,” ” says Miranda, 35. “I also thought, ”This is like the great hip-hop narratives.” It really didn”t take much teasing out.”
