Kid Rock (aka Bob Ritchie), a middle-class white kid the outskirts of Detroit, became a rapper under the influence of Run-DMC and debuted in 1990 with an album which fused the classic hip-hop tradition with Detroit's own tradition of loud rock music. Three albums followed: Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast (Jive, 1990), The Polyfuze Method (Continuum 1992), later reissued as The Polyfuze Method Revisted (Top Dog, 1997), and Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp (Top Dog, 1996), and countless live shows constructed his cult image of madman, before Devil Without A Cause (Atlantic, 1998) established him as a major force in the genre. The album refined his fusion style with a powerful blend of hip-hop, heavy metal and southern boogie. Kid Rock’s musical journey is one that has encompassed underground Detroit rap, heavy metal and country rock, and by finding the perfect blend of all three, he turned an underwhelming career into a huge success. From early controversy over sexualized lyrics to selling 35 million records worldwide and marrying (and divorcing) Pamela Anderson, it’s been a wild ride for one of the wild men of rap.
Detroit, D-Nice and a Debut
Kid Rock was born Robert James Ritchie on January 17, 1971, in Romeo, Michigan, a small rural town north of the Detroit metro area. His father was a car dealer who owned a six-acre orchard where the young Ritchie would work along with his three siblings. He became interested in hip hop in the 1980s, joining a breakdance crew and teaching himself to rap and DJ. From there he began performing at local parties as part of a rap group called The Beast Crew and met D-Nice, a member of KRS-One’s Boogie Down Productions. Robert James Ritchie (born January 17, 1971), known professionally as Kid Rock, is an American musician, singer, rapper, and songwriter. After establishing himself in the Detroit hip-hop scene, he broke through into mainstream success with a rap rock sound before shifting his performance style to country rock. A self-taught musician, he has said he can play every instrument in his backing band and has overseen production on all but two of his albums.
Kid Rock started his music career as a rapper, releasing his debut album Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast (1990), on Jive Records. His subsequent independent releases The Polyfuze Method (1993) and Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp (1996) saw him developing a more distinctive style, which was fully realized on his breakthrough album Devil Without a Cause (1998), which sold 14 million copies. This album and its follow-up, Cocky (2001), were noted for blending elements of hip-hop, country, and rock.
