When Ray Williams was a starting wide receiver and kick returner for Clemson between 1983-86, he was one of the first Tigers in history to reach 1,000 career receiving yards and 1,000 career kickoff return yards.
Today, the number (1,000) is still meaningful to him, but in a far more important realm. It is Williams’ goal to recruit 1,000 people to register as organ donors.
Williams came to Clemson from Fayetteville, N.C. and became one of the top two-sport athletes in school history. On the gridiron under legendary Head Coach Danny Ford, Williams totaled 86 receptions for 1,290 yards and 10 touchdowns. As a returner, he set the school career record in just three seasons, gaining 1,353 yards on 66 kickoff returns.
He could have reached 2,000 kickoff return yards had he not suffered from a hip injury. Ford would not let Williams return kickoffs for fear of serious injury.

CLEMSON, S.C. — Former Clemson two-sport star and Hall-of-Fame student-athlete Ray Williams passed away Friday morning (July 28, 2023) at his home in Easley, S.C.Williams had fought health issues since May of 2016, a byproduct of a long battle against diabetes. He was 58 years old at the time of his passing.
Williams came to Clemson from Fayetteville, N.C. in the fall of 1982 and became one of the top two-sport athletes in Tiger history. He was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
After red-shirting his freshman year in both sports, he was a starter on the football team in the fall of 1983 and a starter on the baseball team in the spring of 1984.On the gridiron, he led the 1983 Clemson team that finished 11th in the nation in receiving with 19 catches for 342 yards.In the spring he batted .326, fourth on the Clemson Baseball team.

Trent Williams (born July 19, 1988) is an American professional footballoffensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he was recognized as an All-American, and was selected by the Washington Redskins fourth overall in the 2010 NFL draft. Williams is considered one of the greatest offensive tackles of all time, having made eleven Pro Bowls and four All-Pro teams.
In 2019, Williams held out the entire year with the Redskins due to contractual and personal grievances regarding a cancerous growth on his head downplayed by the team but later determined by private doctors to be life-threatening. The standoff eventually led to him being traded to the 49ers in 2020.
