INTERVIEW: UDO DIRKSCHNEIDER, April 2022
By Shane Pinnegar
Udo Dirkschneider is one of the elder statesmen of Heavy Metal, having fronted German pioneers Accept from their foundation in 1976 through to his departure in 1987. Through that time he helmed the band through seven mighty studio albums, including the seminal Restless & Wild, Balls To The Wall and Metal Heart.
After leaving the band Dirkschneider formed U.D.O., and has released an epic SIXTEEN studio albums. He’s also played as Dirkschneider and performed duets with the likes of Raven, Doro and Lordi, but for the very first time in his career, he has just released a solo album – a collection of cover songs titled, appropriately, My Way.
Udo generously made some time to place a Zoom call and discuss the new album in detail with 100% ROCK MAGAZINE, just two weeks after his seventieth birthday.
So, I have to say, it’s an absolute honour to talk to you. Restless and Wild, and Metal Heart were amongst the very first records I ever bought. Also, happy birthday to you for 2 weeks ago. How does it feel to be U.D.O. started back in 1987. Since then U.D.O. has become a well known name in the heavy metal world. Within a short period of time U.D.O. became to be a global presence, with pure sound and the unmistakable voice of Udo Dirkschneider. German heavy metal band For other uses, see UDO (disambiguation). The first line-up consisted of guitarists Mathias Dieth and Peter Szigeti, bassist Frank Rittel and drummer Thomas Franke. They released the debut album Animal House on 3 November 1987, which was entirely written by Accept. Szigeti, Rittel and Franke departed the band and was replaced by guitarist Andy Susemihl, bassist Thomas Smuzyszki and drummer Stefan Schwarzmann. The second album Mean Machine was released on 10 January 1989. Susemihl left the band, leaving U.D.O. as a four-piece. The third album Faceless World was released on 25 February 1990. Its sound was a more commercial output, but achieving great success; this being their best selling album so far. The fourth album Timebomb was released on 3 April 1991. It was a heavier effort than their previous releases. In 1992, Dirkschneider put U

Closely tied to the name U.D.O. is "Accept", founded by Udo Dirkschneider and Michael Wagner (who later to become a top producer) in Solingen, which was the predecessor of U.D.O. Already back then, Udo gave the band the label "unmistakable". The path Accept took was marked with classics like "Breaker", "Restless and Wild" and " Balls to the Wall". After the breaking up of Accept in 1987, a large fan community followed Udo Dirkschneider to U.D.O. The loyal fans were not dissapointed, for Udo amazed them with new U.D.O.
Starting with the first albums "Animal House" in 1988 and "Mean Machine" in 1989 U.D.O. proved to be pure heavy metal without any "Trend-Sound" influences. Both Albums continued where Accept had left of in 1986 with "Russian Roulette". "A •
