John Barry Foster (21 August 1927[1] – 11 February 2002)[2][3] was an English actor who had an extensive career in film, radio, stage and television over almost 50 years. He was best known for portraying the title character in the British crime series Van der Valk (1972–1992) and Bob Rusk in Alfred Hitchcock'sFrenzy (1972).

Early life

Foster was born on 21 August 1927 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, the son of a toolsetter. His family moved to Hayes, Middlesex when he was a few months old. He received his formal education at Southall County School.[4]

After leaving school, Foster trained as a plastics organic chemist at the local EMI Central Research Laboratories, while unsuccessfully submitting ideas to advertising agencies.[4] Having been "called to the Colours" under the National Service Act 1948, Foster served with the Royal Air Force.[5]

Barry Foster (born December 8, 1968) is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Summary

Foster attended Duncanville High School in Texas. He went on to attend the University of Arkansas, where he played fullback for the Razorbacks alongside a pair of tailbacks, James Rouse and E. D. Jackson, in Ken Hatfield's wishbone offense. Foster wore #18 for his entire time at Arkansas (1987–1989). Foster helped the Razorbacks win back-to-back Southwest Conference championships in 1988 and 1989, making consecutive trips to the Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas on New Year's Day. Both teams would finish with a 10–2 record, and were ranked in the final polls top 15. After only three collegiate seasons, he decided to forgo his senior year after Hatfield left to coach Clemson, and entered the 1990 NFL Draft. Biography

Barry Foster was an actor, best known for his role as the TV detective in the five-series-long ITV program Van der Valk that spanned 20 years.

In 1994, Foster unveiled a blue plaque near where Alfred Hitchcock was born at 517 Leytonstone High Road.
