Skip Denenberg opens The Morningstar Sessions with “His Old Tattoo,” using that image of ink on an arm to weave a moving tale of love and loss. It’s an exquisite piece of writing, set to an equally warm and inviting folk-rock arrangement, and it sets the tone for the album. The veteran Philadelphia singer-songwriter also writes winningly about relationships in numbers such as “I Think About Us (The Wedding Song)” and the infectious, banjo-inflected “Emmylou,” while the reflective “September” has a fittingly autumnal air. Denenberg also displays a deft comic touch on “My Pet Peeve (The Valentine Song),” and “The Ballad of Tex Cobb” is a rousing country-rocker about the hard-living boxer and actor. He also injects some bite with the accusatory “You Talk a Good Game” and “Wages of Spin,” In which he manages to sound topical without bei

Get to Know Dr. Denenberg

Dr. Denenberg has received the Castle Connolly Top Doctor Award for 25 Years

For over 30 years, Castle Connolly has been the best physician evaluation program anywhere. They select a tiny percentage of physicians to be awarded "Top Doctor" status.

A doctor can't pay to be on the list, and it's not a popularity contest like many city-wide "Best Ofs,” which allow a doctor's patients, employees, and friends to cast votes.

Every year Castle Connolly surveys doctors, asking them who of their colleagues are the best. One of the questions they ask is, "To whom would you refer your own patients?" To become a Top Doctor, a physician must be nominated by another doctor. Deeper probing evaluates a potential Top Doctor's excellence in clinical care, listening and communicating skills, demonstrated empathy, and instilling trust and confidence in patients.

Then, as Castle Connolly says, "Once a Top Doctor does not mean always a Top Doctor." Dr. Denenberg is one of one percent of plastic surgeons who have been awarded the Top Doctor recognition every

Stories Behind The Songs

THE MORNINGSTAR SESSIONS

We recorded 16 songs at Morningstar Studios back in mid March in front of a small studio audience of friendly faces, all brought together by the grace, direction and diligence of one Michael Tearson. The players  consisted of my usual bandmates Tom Hampton, Tommy Geddes and Daniel Faga, with a special guest appearance later on by Don Lee Van Winkle. Producer Glenn Barrett  and engineer David Schonauer were at the helm, and Mark Schultz was on point as usual, keeping all hands on deck, and all heads above water.

His Old Tattoo

Like many of the songs on this CD, the inspiration for this one was multi-faceted.

I have the pleasure of working with  Paige and Christina, two terrific young pre- school teachers, who were discussing their recently acquired  tattoos. I was reminded of an old soldier I had met many years ago who had proudly displayed the tattoo of his unit serving in WWII.  It was around this time that I read a beautiful tribute written by bandmate Tom Hampton about our mutual fr
