38-year old Lieutenant Colonel Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut, stepped out of his re-entry module into history at 06:23 Thursday Oct. 16 2003. Yang's pioneering journey made China the third country in the world, after the Soviet Union and the United States, to carry out a manned space mission.
"I want to say hello to people around the world, to other astronauts in space, to my people, including compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as overseas Chinese. Thank you for your regards," Yang had said as his Shenzhou-V craft orbited the earth at a distance of 343 km.
Yang spent 21 hours in space, orbiting the Earth 14 times, traveling more than 600,000 km, and becoming the 241st human being to visit outer space.
Yang, who notched up 1,350 flying hours as a fighter pilot, carried out more than 200 tasks during his spaceflight. Born in June 1965 in northeast China's Liaoning Province, Yang graduated from the No. 8 PLA Aviation College in 1987. He was selected as a member of China's first team of astronauts in 1998.

Yang Liwei was China's first citizen in space. His launch into orbit aboard Shenzhou-5 on 15 October 2003 marked the entry of China into an elite group, consisting only of Russia and the United States, who had the capability to launch human beings off the planet. Yang's name therefore was placed in history next to those of Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard.

VIENNA 28 May (UN Information Service) -- Yang Liwei, a native of Suizhong county of Liaoning Province, is Senior Colonel of the Air Force of the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) of the Peoples Republic of China.
Mr. Yang enrolled in the PLA in June 1983, and was selected as one of the first batches of Chinas astronauts in January 1998. In a five-year training, Mr. Yang managed to complete all the necessary curricula ranging from basic theory to professional technical training, including adaptation to space environment, and passed the comprehensive evaluation test of professional techniques for astronauts with flying colours. He was subsequently selected as one member of Chinas astronaut echelon to fly the first manned-spacecraft. Upon completion of the historic mission of Shenzhou V on 15 October 2003, Mr. Yang became Chinas first astronaut ever sent to outerspace.
Mr. Yang was born in June 1965.
