Bio
Ernesto Caivano’s meticulously detailed ink drawings depict an ambitious narrative based on lovers’ courtship, separation, retribution and eventual evolution. Varying in format and scale from scroll-like panoramas to small detailed studies, Caivano’s drawing portray a timeless tale of Polygon and Versus, who were torn apart upon the consummation of their union and transported into the woods, signifying an alternate reality and universe. Ernesto Caivano was born in Madrid in 1972. He received a BFA from the Cooper Union, New York (1999), and an MFA from Columbia University, New York (2001). Caivano’s art, which usually takes the form of drawing, visually narrates lyrical stories that unfold over time and across multiple individual works. Through highly intricate and mesmerizing images, the artist creates invented worlds that evoke fairy tales, medieval literature, Romantic poetry, and ancient mythology.
Caivano’s signature, ongoing project After the Woods (2004– ) traces the story of a long-separated knight and princess who inhabit an imaginary realm. The rich formal language of this world draws on a range of sources, including Asian screen painting and prints, early modern abstraction, archaeology, Art Nouveau ornament, information technology, molecular physics, fractal geometrics, and European medieval and Renaissance manuscript illumination. Despite such varied sources, Caivano’s works are unified by their concern with systems—mythological, ecological, and scientific.
