Shimano, Inc. (株式会社シマノ, Kabushiki-gaisha Shimano), originally Shimano Iron Works (島野鐵工所) and later Shimano Industries, Inc. (島野工業株式会社), is a Japanese multinationalmanufacturing company for cycling components, fishing tackle and rowing equipment, which also produced golf supplies until 2005 and snowboarding gear until 2008. Named after founder Shozaburo Shimano (島野庄三郎, 1894–1958) and headquartered in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, the company has 32 consolidated and 11 unconsolidated subsidiaries, with the primary manufacturing plants based in Kunshan (China), Malaysia and Singapore.
In 2017, Shimano had net sales of US $3.2 billion, 38% in Europe, 35% in Asia, and 11% in North America. Bicycle components represented 80%, fishing tackle 19%, and other products 0.1%. The company is publicly traded, with 93 million shares of common stock outstanding.[7]

Celebrating our Centennial Anniversary, Shimano will reach its 100th year this March. Shimano began from the dreams that Shozaburo Shimano, a knife craftsman from Sakai-City, Osaka, aspired of realizing through metal working technology.
Shimano dedicated 100 years into pursuing people’s happiness in finding harmony close to nature and creating new values through bicycle components, fishing tackles and rowing equipment.

Shozaburo Shimano was born in 1894 in Osaka, Japan.
Career
Served at Takagi Ironworks and Hohei Kosho (Ordnance Factory) and then served successively as superintendent of Sakai Motorcar Plant and president of Shimano Iron Works, Shimano Bicycle Company and Sakai Industrial Company.
When the above companies were merged into Shimane Industrial Company was appointed its president (1951). President of Torino Kogyo Kaisha (Torino Industrial Company) (since 1951).
Holds additional posts of director of Sakai Chamber of Commerce & Industry, chief director of Japan Bicycle Industry Society, chairman of Kansai Branch of the same society and official of a few other bicycle industry organizations.
