Dr. Amanda Foreman is the author of the prize-winning best sellers, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and A World on Fire: An Epic History of Two Nations Divided. She has held teaching and research fellowships at NYU, Queen Mary University of London, and The University of Liverpool.

Amanda was born in London, brought up in Los Angeles, and educated in England. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University in New York, and Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford. She received her doctorate in 18th Century British History from Oxford University in 1998.
After completing her DPhil at Oxford University, Foreman published her first book in 1998, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, which was based on her doctoral thesis. It won the 1998 Whitbread Prize for Best Biography and was shortlisted for the 1998 Guardian First Book Award. It inspired a television documentary, a radio play starring Dame Judi Dench; and the Oscar-winning film, ‘The Duchess’, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.
In 2011 Foreman published A World on Some news stories are hard for us to believe; others we would rather not believe. When news appeared about the escape of Amanda Berry from an unassuming house in Cleveland in 2013, after 10 years of imprisonment, many of us had both of these reactions simultaneously: How could this happen for so long with no one noticing? and How could someone do this to another person? It is, indeed, difficult to fathom not only how episodes of kidnapping and abuse could go unobserved for such a long time but also how a publicly friendly neighbor could be so privately inhumane. Over the years, there have been other instances where young women have been kidnapped and their lives altered by forces beyond their control — sometimes by a disturbed individual, sometimes by a misguided organization, and sometimes by even a family member. Our daughter, Ilaria, is divorced with no children. And our youngest son, Lorenzo, (who was ABC's "Bachelor" in 2006) is still unmarried, but with a "serious" girlfriend! In 1962 I moved to Spain with my family. I went to the University of Madrid for two years. After that, I worked for the Samuel Bronston Movie Studio as Mr. Bronston's PR Liaison and Spanish Translator - assisting American movie stars coming to film in Spain. I met my husband-to-be at a wedding in Florence, Italy, in 1965. We became engaged in Madrid on New Year's Eve, and were married in the summer of 1966. We moved to Italy and spent 8 years in Rome and afterwards Milan. Our three children were born in Italy. While in Italy, I created my first line of jewelry. I discontinued the line when, in 1974, we moved to Paris, due to Francesco's jo
