At a book sale at the weekend I picked up a copy of Heinrich Neuhaus’s book The Art of Piano Playing. Neuhaus, who devoted the main part of his career to teaching at the Moscow Conservatory, was the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels and Radu Lupu among others. His book, written in 1958, is a wonderful compression of his thoughts about music and musicianship, full of practical suggestions as well as overarching philosophy.

He often refers with admiration to particular pianists of his day, and it’s interesting to me that all of them are Russian. There must have been unending numbers of talented and serious-minded pianists passing through his class in Moscow. Richter is the one he most often praises for his instinctive grasp of the character of each piece he played, and for the powerful technique which allowed him to bring that character vividly to life.

Heinrich Neuhaus is a legendary musician and pianist. Up to some year ago we would have added "Soviet". But we are today a little bit in embarrassment defining this man, born in Ukraine from German father and Polish mother, who lived in Pietrograd, Kiev, Georgia and Moscow, pupil of Leopold Godowsky, merely a Russian. Perhaps it is more correct to consider him as belonging to a universal culture.

Henrikh Gustavovych Neuhaus (30 March (12 April) 1888, Yelisavetgrad - 10 October 1964, Moscow) was a Ukrainian Soviet pianist, teacher, publicist and music and social activist of German descent.

Biography
Heinrich Gustav Neuhaus was born on 12 April 1888 in the city of Yelisavethrad (now Kropyvnytskyi) to a German family. His father, Gustav Neuhaus, also a pianist, after graduating from the Cologne Conservatory, moved from Germany first to Russia and then to Yelisavethrad, where he became the founder of the local music school; his mother, Marcelina Neuhaus (née Blumenfeld), was the sister of the composer, pianist and conductor Felix Blumenfeld, and the famous musicians Sigismund and Stanislav Blumenfeld. The Blumenfeld family had Austrian Jewish roots.

Heinrich received his initial musical education from his father. In 1904, after graduating from the gymnasium at the age of 16, Heinrich Neuhaus made his debut as a performer in Dortmund with great success, after which he undertook a long concert tour of Germany, Austria and Italy - as he believed
