Newly Appointed Acting National Commissioner of SAPS Major General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi

The acting National Commissioner of Police, Major General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi (38) well known in the Police by the name of Lucky joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 1993. General Mkhwanazi `s initial deployment was in Public Order Policing where he was managing the Public Order Police responsibilities within the South African Police Service. He successfully managed to grow within the ranks of the police till the level of a major General.

He was then appointed to the Special Task force as per his outstanding performance and expertise . His core responsibilities as the section head, Special Task Force encompassed the following duties

To manage all responsibilities assigned to the Special Task Force according to section 218 (1) (m) as stipulated on Schedule 6 Annexure D of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,1996. This includes all assigned operations within and outside the Republic of South Africa. The responsibilities are stipulated as

Strict, determined, and highly disciplined. These are some words used to describe KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi.

“I want the police environment to have clean cops. If we want to fight crime, we must rid the SAPS of criminals and stay with clean cops,” this is what a then 38-year-old acting national police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told the Sunday Independent after suspending corrupt spy boss Richard Mdluli in 2012.

Suspending Mdluli was inarguably one of Mkhwanazi’s ways to prove he was serious about taking action against the rot in the SAPS – which South Africans do not have much confidence in – and stamping his authority.

Fast forward to 2024, Mkhwanazi – who is now a seasoned police commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal – has been hailed for the thorough investigation that led to the arrest of seven suspects for the murder of award-winning rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.

PRETORIA - The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole, is pleased to announce top personnel appointments in the police with effect from 1 August 2019.

Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Elvis Jula, 55 years of age, will be taking up the post of the Provincial Commissioner for Kwa-Zulu Natal with effect from the 1 August 2019. He has more than 30 years of service having enlisted as a student constable in Durban. He rose through the ranks to the level of Lieutenant General in 2016 when he was appointed as Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, where he has been serving to date.

Before his appointment as Provincial Commissioner, Western Cape, he held several positions in KwaZulu-Natal including that of Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Human Resource Management and Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Visible Policing.

Lieutenant General Jula holds a B-tech degree in Policing as well as a National Diploma in Police Administration.
