Poppy treffry biography

Poppy Treffry

Poppy Treffry is a small handmade textiles and homewares company based in the far west of Cornwall.

The company was founded in 2004 when it was just Poppy and one cranky Singer sewing machine that her granddad had found on a dump! Poppy put together a small collection of bags cushions and tea cosies which were quickly snapped up by galleries and boutiques locally and across the UK.

Poppy Treffry now produces a much larger range of gifts and homewares all featuring Poppy’s quirky designs and a sense of humour! Poppy Treffry products are either handmade in England or sourced from UK manufacturers and we have tea towels printed in Cornwall ceramics made in Stoke on Trent and printed cushions from Lincolnshire. But the cranky Singer sewing machines are still very much at the heart of what we do.

The Singers also come into their own for Poppy’s freehand embroidery courses which she runs from her studio in Penzance as well as at a few select locations in the south west. Each participant gets to work on on

Poppy TREFFRY

A design artist who was born in Truro, Cornwall, Poppy studied first at the Falmouth College of Art (1994-5) and then at the Winchester School of Art (1996-1999) with an interest in textiles. Following college she worked abroad for some years in developing countries and amongst craft cooperatives. This gave her the interest in creating a business and working together with other artists. From 2004 she has formed her own textile-based company, Hidden Art, and now works with and employs a number of creative makers who produce her designs (and help create new ones) to patterns chosen for wide appeal. All are quirky, colourful and fun.

The company is based in Newlyn and the intention is to remain there in a bustling and creative arts environment. Starting with tea cosies and shoulder-bags, the range has extended to cards, ceramics, books, and virtually any item which can be sewn. These are offered from the POPPY TREFFRY Company, and can be seen on the website, and in various retail outlets who stock the company's work.
